Fieldtrip Brussels - Experiences & Insights

On february the 4th, our group went to Brussels to observe the busy traffic from a pedestrians and bikers point of view. To summarize, we thought out methods to gain valuable information which results in diverse insights to tackle this particular problem. Traffic Situations At first we looked up busy traffic areas and observed how both the truckers and the bikers react to one anothers presence in different situations. Also we bumped into interesting road signs, which indicate on situations where blindspots might occur. 1. Separated car/truck and biker lanes 2. Separated car/truck and biker lanes without safety boundaries 3. Completely shared car/truck and biker lanes 4. Spots where trucks/car can be "loading and unloading" their goods 5. We designed the stickers with in mind that the back of the truck is the most important place for advertising. So we made sure at least half of the back was free for advertising. 1. Lights in the green stroke to make it catches the attention of the biker. And danger signs in the blind spot to make sure they know this is were they really shouldn't be. 2. Essers uses white and red trucks. So we examined which has the best contrast with the blind spot sticker. The white is actually to bright, so the people watch the advertisments, but they ignore the blind spot sticker. 3. using all the same red. making it all fits together. But the biggest problem is, they don't really see what's important and what not. The truck and also the road where in different kinds of grey.
